Husein’s Biography

Husein Yatabarry is the Executive Director of the Muslim Community Network (MCN), where he leads with a steadfast commitment to community service, education, and equity. As the first American-born child of Gambian Muslim immigrants, Husein’s journey reflects resilience, empathy, and a deep belief in the transformative power of belonging and civic engagement.

Born and raised in the Bronx, Husein’s early years were marked by identity challenges—navigating life as an African Muslim in New York City, learning English at school while speaking Soninke at home. Those experiences instilled in him an enduring understanding that identity formation and self-discovery are central to leadership and empowerment. Today, he draws upon that foundation to help others embrace their stories, culture, and faith as sources of strength.

A graduate of The City College of New York, Husein earned his degree in Biology with a minor in Psychology. He spent seven years in education, including four in leadership roles across New York City public charter schools, where he championed culturally responsive teaching and student-centered learning. His leadership was recognized through his nomination to the Master Teacher Fellowship Program and receipt of the Cardinal Educator of the Year Award, highlighting his impact on students and staff alike.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Husein became the Executive Director of Neighborhood United, a youth-focused nonprofit he co-founded to help young people in the South Bronx unlock their potential through art, coding, and sports. Under his leadership, the organization grew from a grassroots initiative into a thriving community hub—expanding programs, building sustainable partnerships, and securing funding from major foundations and corporate partners.

At MCN, Husein continues to expand that vision on a citywide scale. His leadership has deepened MCN’s advocacy on issues of hate crime prevention, immigrant rights, and civic engagement, while strengthening partnerships with government agencies and faith-based organizations. Under his guidance, MCN has been recognized by the New York City Council and the Bronx Borough President’s Office for its impact across Muslim, immigrant, and interfaith communities.

Husein’s dedication has earned him multiple distinctions, including being named one of Amsterdam News’ 2025 Black New Yorkers of the Week and one of Brooklyn Org’s 25 Changemakers of 2025. In 2021, he was nominated for Community Leader of the Year at the Sene-Gambia West African Awards, and in 2023 he was featured in The Black Muslim Series for his contributions to community empowerment and faith leadership.

Outside his professional life, Husein is an avid runner, traveler, and family man who values balance, wellness, and reflection. His journey—from the Bronx to citywide leadership—embodies the spirit of service, the power of education, and the enduring resilience of the Muslim American story.
