Civil Liberties

  Protecting Our Rights

Muslim Americans have been disproportionately affected by restrictions, surveillance, demonization and detentions since 9/11.

While hate crimes, media smears and civil liberties violations have often kept our members in emergency response mode, MCN is increasingly looking to find opportunities to impact policies though programming that includes and empowers Muslims to take positive action.

In its Civil Liberties Programming, MCN promotes:

  • Immigrant Rights Advocacy
  • Know Your Rights Community and Civic Education
  • Dialogue with Law Enforcement
  • Strong Partnership with Civil Liberties and Advocacy Organizations

Moreover, in 2010 MCN added the Muslims in the Mirror series of panels on Radicalization which will help fill a void in community discussion of this complex topic.

Addressing these issues for the last five years Executive Director Adem Carroll has co-anchored a monthly radio show on WBAI called “The War On Immigrants Report.” (www.WBAI.org) a sample of several shows co-anchored with Families for Freedom is linked here, highlighting the work of activists and lawyers and the testimonies of affected immigrant families.

MCN is an active member of the steering committee of New York Religious Campaign Against Torture, the Interfaith Immigration Coalition, working towards comprehensive reform, and of Muslim Civil Liberties Coalition (MACLC) www.maclc1.wordpress.com

The New York Muslim American Civil Liberties Coalition released its 11/08 critique of a controversial report from the New York Police Department about the threat of domestic radicalization. See MACLC web blog.

Since then, the MACLC group has been especially active as a think tank opposing religious profiling and inaccurate threat analysis.

Despite ongoing arrests for real and imagined terror plots, we continue to raise questions that intended to be constructive. See MCN Executive Director Adem Carroll on Al Jazeera September 28, 2009: www.youtube.com

  Education and Advocacy

As a steering committee member, MCN has endorsed the work of communities in support of the Khalil Gibran International Academy (KGIA) and against the attacks on MCN Board Member Debbie Almontaser. Please see Ciskgia and an article on the struggles around this school: Article

Towards inclusion: MCN members also support current efforts to formalize Muslim holidays in the New York City public schools. See: www.youtube.com
