RAMADAN
RAMADAN MUBARAK.
It is Ramadan 2009. And once Again MCN is partnered with others to co-sponsor a variety of public iftars throughout the city.
MCN
is co-sponsoring an iftar with Brooklyn Borough President Marty
Markowitz on August 25 (see attached invitation); with Manhattan
Borough President Scott Stringer on September 2 (see attached); with
Queens Borough President Helen Marshall on September 9 (see attached) ,
and our ninth annual Interfaith iftar on September 15 in partnership
with Union Theological Seminary and Interfaith Center of New York
(attached). As the invitations make clear, these annual community
events include prayers and dinner, with awards recognizing many diverse
Muslims active in our community as well as allies important to the
growth of positive identity, civic engagement, and social services.
In
addition to the events we directly sponsor, with Moe Razvi as an
effective catalyst, Moe also is active setting up an official Bronx
Iftar: Debbie Almontaser is involved with the Sept 12 Interfaith Iftar
at Brooklyn's First Unitarian Church; and Robina Niaz and her youth
team at Turning Point have planned an Iftar Fundraiser for August 29.
At the same time, partners like MUBANY and ICNA have planned other
notable events for the month; and student groups have also been
planning Fast-a Thons. No doubt many of our members are helping to
organize local dinners in their community as well.
Some
of our network members will also be attending a small iftar with the
Mayor early in the holy month. And, at the end of the holiday there is
usually an Eid organized by the City Council. MCN commends the City
Council for its overwhelming support for Muslim Holidays in the Public
Schools.
