Preparedness Program

MCN is working in partnership with Red Cross to reach Muslims in New York with more information, resources, education, training, and assistance for disaster mitigation, preparedness, and recovery. With the help of New York Disaster Interfaith Services, Red Cross supplied MCN with a full time VISTA Volunteer to develop a community survey, organize community-based workshops at mosques and other community centers, and to develop culturally specific educational materials.

Last year our VISTA volunteer was Elyse Peters Arnold from Ann Arbor, Michigan, who had studied Hindi and Urdu. Her work and the VISTA project strengthened both the MCN collective infrastructure and benefit the entire New York area Muslim community.

For two months in 2009, Jemel Amin Derbali served as MCN's VISTA Volunteer. Though unfortunately MCN is currently without this position for the near future, we will continue to assist with building capacity for emergency response in partnership with city, mosques and student groups.

MCN calls on community members to volunteer, get trained and join us in preparing for disasters, swine flu etc. Please see NYC Office of Emergency Management website or visit our blog at PrepareNY.
